    It’s never too soon to take care of your bones, learn how to nourish them, and be aware of the possibility you may have osteoporosis.

    Osteoporosis is a bone disease in which the quantity and/or quality of the bone is reduced, leading to weaker bones and broken bones. It is NOT to be confused with osteoarthritis - a disease of the joints.

    Learn how to nourish your body for optimal bone health on September 27 at Osteoporosis Canada- Manitoba Chapter’s Annual Fall Public Forum.

    Presentation and practical tools
    Registered dietitians Pat McCarthy Briggs and Anna Pohorecky will advise on topics including how to get your calcium, Vitamin D supplementation, and the importance of protein in your diet. They will share practical tools like the Calcium Calculator- a practical way to determine if you are getting enough calcium in your diet, and how you can meet the recommended target. 

    Special guest Dr. Bill Leslie, Director – Bone Mineral Density (BMD) Clinic and member of Osteoporosis Canada’s Scientific Advisory Council, will join the panel discussion.

    See how you measure up at the Stand Tall Canada display, gather a wealth of excellent health information and resources, and attend the informative presentation. Refreshments will be provided.

    About the presenters
    Pat McCarthy Briggs is a registered dietitian and holds a Master’s degree in Health Education. Pat is a founding member of the Manitoba Chapter of Osteoporosis Canada, a past member of Osteoporosis Canada’s National Education Committee, and has served on the Manitoba Chapter’s Education and Volunteer Training Committees. Pat is a frequent speaker at the Manitoba Chapter’s Public Forums and other presentations for health care professionals.

    Anna Pohorecky is a registered dietitian and long-time volunteer with the Manitoba Chapter of Osteoporosis Canada. Anna is the chair of the chapter’s Education Committee and provides training on nutrition to Chapter volunteers. As a member of the Chapter’s Speakers’ Bureau, Anna also does presentations for community groups.

    Dr. Bill Leslie is Director of the Manitoba Bone Density Program, and a Professor of Medicine and Radiology at the University of Manitoba with over 300 peer-reviewed publications. Dr. Leslie’s research interests are in fracture risk assessment, osteoporosis testing, and nuclear diagnostic techniques. He is Past Chair of the Osteoporosis Canada Scientific Advisory Council, Past President of the International Society for Clinical Densitometry, and he was involved in the development of the 2010 Clinical Practice Guidelines for the Diagnosis and Management of Osteoporosis in Canada.
