Dr. Whelan is a Professor at the College of Pharmacy at Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia. After receiving her Bachelor of Science (BSc) in Pharmacy she worked in community pharmacy for 4 years. She then obtained her Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) degree from the Medical University of South Carolina in 1989 and completed a one year post Pharm.D. Residency in Family Medicine.

At the College of Pharmacy, Dr. Whelan is involved in teaching in the area of therapeutics, primarily in areas related to women’s health. In 2011 Dr. Whelan was awarded the “Faculty of Health Professions Teaching Excellence Award” and is a three time recipient of the “Dr. Jessie I. MacKnight Award for Teaching Excellence in Pharmacy” awarded by the graduating students at the College of Pharmacy. She played an active role in the development, implementation and evaluation of the unique problem-based learning curriculum that was started at the College in 1997. In 2000, Dr. Whelan and her colleagues were awarded the “Bristol-Myers Squibb National Award for Excellence in Education” in recognition of their work on this new curriculum. Dr. Whelan is involved in several collaborative research activities including critical appraisal of natural health products for women’s health, understanding of pharmacists’ knowledge of bioidentical hormone therapy, and examining various issues related to emergency contraception.

Dr. Whelan practices pharmacy at the Dalhousie University Family Medicine Clinic (affiliated with the Queen Elizabeth II Health Sciences Centre) one day a week as part of her joint appointment with the Department of Family Medicine. At the clinic she offers a variety of patient-focused pharmacy services including patient education and medication reviews.

Dr. Whelan has written several continuing education review articles and presented several seminars on a variety of topics relating to women’s health. She has been one of the faculty for the “Women’s Health Certificate Program” offered by the Ontario College of Pharmacists. She has been a member of Osteoporosis Canada Scientific Advisory Committee since 2005 participating in a number of projects. She has also participated in a variety of activities with the Nova Scotia Chapter of Osteoporosis Canada. Additionally, Dr. Whelan is the President of the Pharmacy Examining Board of Canada and is a Past-President of the Association of Faculties of Pharmacy of Canada.

Professional Awards and/or Accomplishments:

  1. April 2011: Received the “Faculty of Health Professions Teaching Excellence Award” from the Faculty of Health Professions at Dalhousie University
  2. Feb 2012: Received the “Patient Care Enhancement Award” awarded by the Canadian Society of Hospital Pharmacy for the project: “Evaluating the Role of Pharmacist Teachers in Family Medicine Residency Training Programs: A Qualitative Analysis” (co-recipients: Dr. Derek Jorgenson, Dr. Andries Muller)
  3. May 2011: Received the “2011 AFPC Woods Hughes Special Service Award” from the Association of Faculties of Pharmacy of Canada
