Our Scientific Advisory Council Members

Susan J Whiting PhD

Member of the SAC since 2000

Areas of Interest/Expertise: Calcium; Vitamin D; Dietary Intakes; Acid-Base Balance; Nutrition and Bone Health.

SAC Activities:

  1. Answer questions from the office on nutrition topics
  2. Made telehealth presentations on Diet and Bone Health (2011; 2012)
  3. Served on Subcommittee looking at Vitamin D Guidelines
  4. Nutrition lead on 2002 OSC Guidelines
  5. Author of many Q&A and other short articles for OC publications

Biography:

Dr. Susan Whiting received her PhD in nutrition from the University of Guelph and had postdoctoral training at the University of British Columbia. After teaching at Mount Saint Vincent University for 6 years, she moved to the University of Saskatchewan where she has served as Head of the Division of Nutrition and Dietetics as well as a term as Assistant Dean, Graduate Affairs. For over 30 years she has conducted research on dietary influences on bone health, effectiveness and use of nutrient supplements, and the calcium and vitamin D status of Canadians. She is a member of several research teams including Linking agro-food systems and community equity for food security in Ethiopia. Dr. Whiting is a member of the Canadian Nutrition Society (and served as President of CSNS 2002-04), Dietitians of Canada, the American Nutrition Society, and the American Society for Bone and Mineral Research. She is on the steering committee of the Canadian Health Measures Survey and is a member of Scientific Advisory Board of Osteoporosis Canada. She serves as a Deputy Editor of The British Journal of Nutrition, Associate Editor of Applied Physiology, Nutrition and Metabolism journal, and as an expert on the International Institute for Bone Health and Nutrition. Locally she is active in the Saskatoon Osteoporosis chapter and sits on the Board of Directors of CHEP, a food-based community organization.
