Cheryl Baldwin
Chair, Board of Directors

After 25 years of volunteering for the Canadian
Red Cross doing Disaster Services work, Cheryl has accepted a full time paid position with the Red Cross as
the Disaster Management Lead for Manitoba. Cheryl has been recognized with a number of awards for her
volunteer work at Red Cross, including the Queens Jubilee Metal and the Order of the Red Cross.
Cheryl has worked in the non-profit sector for
almost 25 years. During this time she has done a variety of functions including fundraising, human
resources, board governance, finances, general office management, international trade development and
economic development.
Cheryl became the Treasurer for the Manitoba
Chapter of Osteoporosis Canada soon after her mother was diagnosed with Osteoporosis. Since
then Cheryl found out she also has a very low bone density for her age.
Cheryl will be taking on the
role of Chairperson of the Board of Directors of Osteoporosis Canada in September.
Emily Bartens
Vice Chair, Board of Directors
Hamilton, Ontario
Emily Bartens is a bookkeeper working for a
diverse group of businesses in the Hamilton/Burlington area.
Emily became involved with Osteoporosis Canada
through the Hamilton Chapter in 2002. Emily served the Hamilton Chapter from 2002 to 2007 in the roles
of Chapter Treasurer, Bone China Tea Chair, Chapter Chair and Chapter Representative at national operations
meetings. Emily became the first Chair of the national Operation Advisory Council, a position she held
for 3 years ending in June 2007. Emily continues to devote her time to the National Board.
With a family history of
osteoporosis, she strives to do all that she can to support Osteoporosis Canada.
Robert Allard
Laval, Quebec
After graduating from McGill University with a
Bachelor’s degree in Mathematics, Robert Allard started his career with Sun Life of Canada as a computer
science professional. Thereafter, he accepted increasingly senior management responsibilities first as
Vice-President and principal officer of the company in 1989 and then successive responsibilities for the
Group Client Services, Individual Operations and Sales and Agency divisions. In 1997 he became Vice-President
and Chief Information Officer of the company in Canada. His last position was Vice-president, Public
Relations & Administration. The position was abolished in 2000 after the demutualization of the company.
For the last five years, he has occupied management positions in the field of education with the Collège
Montmorency in Laval.
Robert served for six years on the Board of
Directors of the College Mont-Saint-Louis, has been president of the insurance sector for the 1996 Centraide
(United Way) fund raising campaign. He was Vice-President of the fund raising campaign of Le Centre
Francois-Michel in 1999 and 2000 and is has been a member of the Board of Governors of the Jeune Chambre de
Commerce de Montreal from 1998 to 2001. He then joined the Board of Directors of the Osteoporosis Society of
Canada in 2001 from which he retired in 2005 as Vice-chair.
Alison Buie
Calgary Alberta
Alison Buie is a community and government
relations professional with 18 years of experience working in the public and private sectors. She is
currently Manager, Government Relations with the Calgary Stampede and holds an MBA and BA (Communications)
from the University of Calgary. Prior to joining the Stampede, Alison provided strategic counsel
directly to Calgary’s Mayor for nine years with overseeing the community relations portfolio.
Alison has volunteered with a variety of
organizations and currently is a Board Director with WordFest (Banff-Calgary International Writers
Festival). She is a founding committee member of the National Awards Committee of Osteoporosis Canada
(2002 - present) and previously served a 6 year term on Osteoporosis Canada Board(1999 - 2005), including
being Chair of the former Society Development Committee (2000 to 2004).
Ken Chong
Toronto, Ontario
Ken has been a member of the Institute of
Chartered Accountants of Ontario since 1984, and a member of the Certified General Accountants Associations
of Ontario since 1983. Ken has been a partner in the firm of Beale Wallington Chong, Chartered
Accountants, since its inception in 1989.
From1998 to 2007, Ken was Treasurer for
Etobicoke Services for Seniors, an agency funded by the Ontario Ministry of Health and Long Term Care and the
United Way to support seniors remaining in their homes and in their community. Ken has also served as
the volunteer auditor of the Certified General Accountants Association of Ontario – Peel Chapter, from 1991
to 2006.
Ken has served as the Treasurer and Chair of
the Finance and Audit Committee of the Osteoporosis Society from June 2002 until June 2007. He has
served as the Chair of the Board of Directors of Osteoporosis Canada for the past two years and will move
into the role of Past Chair in September.
Mark Dwor
Vancouver, British Columbia
Mark Dwor has been a lawyer in Vancouver for 30 years. He is the Chairman of the Canadian Academy of
Independent Scholars, has been an adjunct Professor at the Faculty of Law at the University of British
Columbia and is an Associate Member of the Department of Continuing Studies at Simon Fraser University. He is
a Past Grand Chaplain of the Grand Lodge of Freemasons of British Columbia and Yukon. He is also a Freeman of
the City of London.
Mark has been actively involved as a volunteer and a Board Member on a spectrum of not-for-profit
organizations, such as the National Council of the Canadian Bar Association in 1980 – 82; the Board of
Variety, The Children’s Charity, Tent 47 from 1984 to present and the Board of The Vancouver International
Children’s Festival, 2002 to 2007.
Mark’s mother, who is in her nineties, has osteoporosis and recently finished a full participation in a
successful osteoporosis related clinical trial.
Dr. Heather Frame
Winnipeg, Manitoba
Dr. Frame
received her medical education at the University of Manitoba and is a Certificant of the College of
Family Physicians of Canada. Dr. Frame worked as a Family Physician in Toronto for 2 years before
returning to Winnipeg where she has practiced since 1985. Dr. Frame is a Family Physician at the
Assiniboine Clinic in Winnipeg as well as Family Physician at the Mature Women’s Center Osteoporosis
Clinic, Victoria Hospital, Winnipeg. Dr. Frame is a committee member for the Manitoba Bone
Density Program.
Dr.
Frame is also a member of the Board of Directors for Foundation for Medical Practice
Education.
Dr. Frame has
worked with the SAC on a number of publications and committees. She has also done multiple CME events
for Physicians and Public Forums on Osteoporosis.
Dr. Frame is a
voice for Primary Care and its role in the management of osteoporosis.
Larry Funnell
Cloverdale, British Columbia
After a career spanning 35 years and many
disciplines including meteorology, domestic and international policy, management and human resources, Larry
retired from Environment Canada in 2006. Retirement afforded him the time to relax and enjoy his hobby
of woodcarving. It also gave him the opportunity to reflect upon the numerous fractures he had suffered
before he reached age 50 and the shocking diagnosis of osteoporosis. His search for information
led him to the Canadian Osteoporosis Patient Network where he found not only answers but the support and
encouragement of others who had experienced the same shock and faced the same challenges of living with
osteoporosis. Two years after joining the COPN executive committee, Larry became the Chair in June
2009.
Brigadier-General Hilary Jaeger, OMM, MSM, CD
Ottawa, Ontario
Born in England
in 1959, Brigadier-General Hilary Jaeger spent her early school years in Scotland, Quebec, and New Brunswick.
Her undergraduate studies in mathematics and engineering provided a good basis for the study of
medicine, and she received her MD from the University of Toronto in 1986. A Reservist with the West Nova
Scotia Regiment since the age of 17, she transferred to the Regular Force while a medical student.
BGen Jaeger has
served with five different land force units: 1,2, and 4 Field Ambulance, and 1 and 4 Service Battalion. Her
specific appointments included Unit Medical Officer, Treatment Platoon Commander, Officer Commanding Medical
Company, Deputy Commanding Officer, and Commanding Officer. BGen Jaeger served as the Senior Medical
Officer and Officer Commanding the National Support Element in Croatia and Bosnia-Herzegovina during the
initial deployment of the United Nations mission in the former Yugoslavia in 1992. Two years later she
returned to Bosnia in command of the Forward Surgical Team. While Commanding Officer of 2 Field
Ambulance, she had the privilege of leading the unit in support of the 1997 Manitoba flood and the 1998 Ice
Storm. Having completed all levels of Canadian professional military education, BGen Jaeger is proud to
have been the first Medical Branch officer posted to teach at the Canadian Land Forces Command and Staff
College, also known as "Foxhole U", in Kingston.
In 2000 she was
promoted colonel and given responsibility for national planning and coordination of medical operations (a
real challenge during the aftermath of 9/11 and the Anthrax letters), followed by a year as the medical
advisor to the Chief of the Land Staff. In 2004 she was promoted to her present rank and appointed
Surgeon General. In 2007 she took over additional duties as Commander CF Health Services Group and Director
General Health Services. Since October 2009, BGen Jaeger has been deployed to ISAF HQ in Kabul overseeing
medical support to the mission in Afghanistan.
BGen Jaeger is
married to BGen Christopher Thurrott; it may be a 'first' for the Canadian Forces to have two Brigadier
Generals married to each other. Her obsession outside of work is golf and she also enjoys travel,
cooking, gardening, reading, and the occasional Scotch.
Paul Kirkconnell, M.B.A.
Toronto, Ontario
Paul Kirkconnell has been appointed Executive Vice-President, Venture Capital the Business Development
Bank of Canada (BDC). Mr. Kirkconnell will lead BDC’s direct and indirect venture capital investments
in technology-based businesses, and strategic initiatives designed to stimulate Canada’s venture capital and
innovation ecosystems. BDC has over $700 million in committed venture capital investments.
Mr. Kirkconnell brings over 25 years of experience in investments, business development, corporate
strategy and consulting gained in Canada, the U.S. and Europe, with a focus on the healthcare sector.
Prior to joining BDC, he was owner of P-A-K Limited, providing strategy, financing and corporate development
advice to emerging biopharmaceutical companies and their investors. From 2005 to 2007, he was Managing
Director of DRI Capital, a privately-held investment management company with over US$1.0 billion under
management. Before this, he established Aventis Capital which had over $750 million under management.
Mr. Kirkconnell holds a Masters of Business Administration from the University of Western Ontario (Richard
Ivey School of Business).
William Leslie, MD MSc FRCPC
Winnipeg, Manitoba
Dr. Leslie is Professor of Medicine and
Radiology at the University of Manitoba. He obtained his specialty training from the University of Manitoba
and McGill University, qualifying in Internal Medicine in 1989 and in Nuclear Medicine in 1990. He is
clinically active in nuclear medicine and thyroid cancer, and has research interests in osteoporosis testing
and other nuclear diagnostic techniques including PET scanning.
He is currently Chair of the Scientific
Advisory Council, co-led the “2010 Clinical Practice Guidelines for the Diagnosis and Management of
Osteoporosis in Canada”, on the Board of the International Society for Clinical Densitometry, Director of the
Manitoba Bone Density Program, and Co-Director of the Winnipeg PET Imaging Centre.
Jeffrey Narod
Vancouver,
BC
Jeffrey Narod graduated from University of
British Columbia with a Bachelor of Arts in 1974. He currently owns and operates Narod Properties
Corp., a small property management firm in Vancouver, specializing in the management of residential
investment properties.
Jeffrey is an active volunteer and a Board
Member of the British Columbia Paraplegic Association. He Joined the Board of Directors in 1986 and
served as Vice Chair from 1996 to 2005. He served as Chairperson from 2005 to 2010 and is currently
serving as Past Chair. His Committee work has included Executive, Audit, HR and Fund Development and
has participated as member of task group on Governance Review & Development
He has served on the National Board of
Directors of Canadian Paraplegic Association since 1996 and is currently serving as Vice-President
He has also served as a Board of Director of
BCPA Housing Society since 2008 in position of Chairperson; the British Columbia Paraplegic Foundation from
2005 to 2010; and is a Retired member of the Board of Directors of Lions Paraplegic Lodge Society
Brenda Payne
Bible Hill, Nova Scotia
Brenda Payne’s
clinical background is in Nursing, having achieved a Master’s Degree in Family Systems Nursing. Her work
experience has been diverse and includes roles at the direct care, educator and senior administration levels
here in Canada and in England and Switzerland.
She is currently
working as a Health Care Consultant. Her previous work with the Nova Scotia Department of Health provided
opportunities to establish key linkages and partnerships to forward osteoporosis care in the province.
Brenda Payne has a thorough understanding of government and the health care system.
Brenda Payne has
served on provincial and national boards and brings this valuable experience to Osteoporosis Canada.
Brenda is
passionate about osteoporosis and brings the unique perspective of the Atlantic provinces with her.
Sharron Steeves, Physiotherapist, Dip
PT&OT
Moncton, New Brunswick
Sharron is a
graduate of the University of Toronto, Physical & Occupational Therapy program. She has been a private
practice owner in NB since 1979. Currently the owner of Physio Fitness in Riverview NB. an active volunteer
with Osteoporosis Canada for 10 years , currently serving on the National High Risk Patient committee and taking on the role of Chair of the Operations Advisory Council.
