Ultrasound testing

A heel ultrasound test involves immersing your foot in a bath of warm water, allowing high frequency sound waves to pass through your heel. These sound waves are similar to those that monitor fetal development in pregnant women. The test measures the density and quality of the bone in your heel. Because it is portable and less expensive than other technologies, heel ultrasound has the potential to service rural and remote areas at a realistic cost.

Heel ultrasound technology is effective in estimating risk of fracture in postmenopausal women over 65, but is not sufficiently precise for follow-up to monitor treatment. Osteoporosis Canada recommends that individuals who receive ultrasound results indicating low bone density talk to their physicians about having a BMD test.
