About one-third of Canadians 65 years of age or older will fall this year.
The broken bones that may result can be disabling. People with osteoporosis need
to be aware that falls can be very serious, and could affect their way of
life.
Some causes of falls :
-
Some medications or combinations of medications that
cause dizziness, lightheadedness or loss of balance
-
Walking on ice or snow
-
Tripping over an obstacle, such as a scatter rug,
lamp cord or piece of furniture
-
Slipping on a slippery surface, such as the tub or
shower floor
-
Diminished vision, muscle strength,
coordination and/or balance
-
Drinking alcohol
-
Inattention
This checklist may help you to eliminate many
common problems that could cause a fall :
-
Keep snow and ice build-up away from the house and
walking areas, such as the driveway or sidewalk. (Arranging snow removal by
someone else may be necessary.)
-
Wear specialty strap-on "ice-grippers" over your
snow boots, especially while walking a dog or travelling over icy
areas.
-
Remove all loose wires, cords, and throw rugs
in your house, or make sure they are out of the way.
-
Install grab bars and have a seat or small chair in
the tub or shower.
-
Make sure the tub has a non skid surface.
-
Have a raised toilet seat
-
Have halls, entrances and stairs (inside and out)
well lit
-
Have night-lights at strategic points around your
home. Keep them on.
-
Make sure stairs, treads and rugs are in good repair and the
handrail on any stairs is sturdy.
