Volunteers are an integral part of Osteoporosis Canada. They are actively involved in every aspect of life at
OC – from our local chapters across the country which expand the reach of our vital programs and services,
offering them to those in need and acting as contact points for those with osteoporosis in their communities,
to the volunteers who sit on our National Board, to the empowered patients who advocate for improved
treatment and care for those suffering from the disease. Without the commitment and contributions of these
passionate volunteers throughout the country, our organization would have no hope of fulfilling our shared
mission and vision.

Osteoporosis Canada takes seriously its training and support of volunteers at all levels of the
organization. In 1999, OC passed a declaration entitled "Vision of Voluntarism" to inform how we aspire
to work with all volunteers - it is a statement of values and purpose that forms the foundation of all that
we do.
Among its main tenets are:
- Empowerment of the volunteer and patient;
- The values of inclusiveness and collaboration - the success of our organization is built on healthy
working relationships - those founded on mutual respect, collaboration and teamwork. These principles
also state that we include people in decision making and work towards decisions that the osteoporosis
community can support ;
- The cultivation of voluntary community leadership;
- The organization serves and is supported by those with osteoporosis; and
- A belief in partnerships - we monitor our relationships, recognizing that partnerships are built on
dialogue and grow best with conscious care.
