Osteoporosis Canada proudly recognizes Dr. William D. Leslie as the 2008
Lindy Fraser Memorial Award recipient.
On September 12th, 2008,
Dr. Leslie received the prestigious award during the Scientific Advisory Council (SAC) Lunch Gathering
at the Delta Centre-Ville Montreal, held in connection with the 30th Annual of the American Society for Bone
Mineral Research (ASBMR).
The Lindy Fraser Memorial Award was established in 1994 and is given to individuals who have done exemplary
research and have helped significantly to increase the knowledge about osteoporosis. This year, Dr. Leslie
has been chosen to receive this award for his outstanding contributions to osteoporosis research and
education.
Dr. Leslie is a Professor of Medicine and Radiology at the University of Manitoba. He obtained his specialty
training from the University of Manitoba and McGill University, qualifying in Internal Medicine in 1989 and
in Nuclear Medicine in 1990. He is clinically active in general medicine and nuclear medicine, and has
research interests in osteoporosis testing and other nuclear diagnostic techniques including PET
scanning.
Dr. Leslie joined the Scientific Advisory Council of Osteoporosis Canada in 1997. He contributed to the 2002
Clinical Practice Guidelines on Osteoporosis document and to the recent publications "Recognizing and
Reporting Vertebral Fractures: Reducing the Risk of Future Osteoporotic Fractures" and "Recommendations for
Bone Mineral Density Reporting in Canada." More recently, he has been involved in the Ministry of Health and
Long-Term Care (MOHLTC) projects addressing bone density testing in men, bone density testing in women age
40-59 years, and updated vitamin D recommendations.
He is currently the Vice-Chair of the Scientific Advisory Council and
Chair of the Guidelines Committee for Osteoporosis Canada. Dr. Leslie has significantly shared his time and
expertise in advancing the profile of Osteoporosis Canada and the Scientific Advisory Council especially in
the areas of guidelines and best practices recommendations.
Aside from his active involvement with OC, Dr. Leslie sits on the Board
of the International Society for Clinical Densitometry. He is also the Director of the Manitoba Bone Density
Program and Co-Director of the Winnipeg PET Imaging Centre.
