One of Osteoporosis Canada's founders to receive
the Order of Canada
Osteoporosis Canada is very pleased to congratulate Dr. Timothy M.
Murray, one of Osteoporosis Canada's founding members, on his appointment to the Order of Canada (C.
M.).
Michaëlle Jean, the Right Honourable Governor General of Canada, recently
announced 89 new appointments to the Order of Canada.
"Dr. Murray has been a tireless supporter of Osteoporosis Canada since
it's inception in 1982," says President & CEO Karen Ormerod. "It is especially fitting that Dr. Murray is
to receive this national honour as we celebrate our twenty-fifth anniversary. We heartily congratulate him
and thank him for his outstanding contributions to the osteoporosis community in Canada."
In 1981 Dr. Murray synthesized his contacts with individuals who
possessed the knowledge and experience needed to make his vision a reality; the following year, Osteoporosis
Canada (then the Osteoporosis Society of Canada) was born. As the first national patient society for
osteoporosis in the world, Osteoporosis Canada began with a drive to inform and support the public, educate
physicians and raise money for research. After 25 years, Dr. Murray is proud of Osteoporosis Canada's highly
respected Scientific Advisory Council, its published Guidelines for the diagnosis and management of
osteoporosis and, most recently, the scholarship awards it has funded, including one named in his
honour.
Dr. Murray is professor emeritus of medicine at the University of
Toronto. He is past Director of the Toronto Centre for the Canadian Multi-Centre Osteoporosis Study (CaMOS),
and past Director of the Metabolic Bone Clinic at St. Michael's Hospital, Toronto. His major research
interests have been with the action of the parathyroid hormone, the study of PTH receptors and the biological
role of the carboxylterminal region of PTH.
Canada's highest honour, the Order of Canada, established in 1967, pays
tribute to individuals for their extraordinary accomplishments and service in various fields of human
endeavour. All recipients will be invited to accept their insignias at a ceremony to be held at a later
date.
