Saskatchewan formulary lists monthly dosing regimen Actonel® 75 mg

February 15, 2008

Effective February 15, 2008, Saskatchewan Health listed Actonel® 75 mg on the provincial drug plan formulary, under the category of Exceptional Drug Status (EDS), with the same criteria for coverage as Actonel® 35 mg.  Actonel® 75 mg is the first and only monthly two-day dosing regimen for the treatment of postmenopausal osteoporosis available in Canada.  With Actonel® 75 mg, patients take one 75 mg tablet on two consecutive days each month.  This new dosing regimen may offer patients a convenient way to treat their osteoporosis and reduce the risk of fractures.

People with osteoporosis who rely on the Saskatchewan public drug plan for coverage will now have the same access to Actonel® 75 mg monthly two-day dosing as the once-a-week therapies. A form must be completed by the physician and submitted with the patient prescription.
