COPN’s Inaugural Virtual Forum: Osteoporosis Medications: Benefits and Risks

The Canadian Osteoporosis Patient Network (COPN) hosted its first Virtual Forum, entitled: Osteoporosis Medications: Benefits and Risks, on Monday, March 2, 2009.

The forum, moderated by Julie Foley, President and CEO of Osteoporosis Canada, featured Dr. Angela Cheung, who discussed the benefits and risks of osteoporosis medications, touched on the impact of osteoporosis, and opened the floor to questions at the end. Dr. Cheung provided a good overview of the medications approved for use in Canada, and some of the rationale and research supporting the use of these medications. She did an excellent job of addressing, and for many, as evidenced in the feedback received, dispelling the fears that arise as a result of media representation of some of the risk factors. Dr. Cheung has been in clinical practice for the past 17 years and specializes in postmenopausal osteoporosis. She is a member of the Scientific Advisory Council (SAC) with Osteoporosis Canada and is currently chairing the Research committee of the SAC.

There was great interest shown in this inaugural forum, with full registration and an overwhelming influx of questions during the presentation.

The forum is available for viewing, by clicking here. You will need to enter your first and last name along with your email address in order to view the forum. Please feel free to send us your feedback to copn@osteoporosis.ca; we look forward to offering more of these forums and appreciate your input, which will serve to improve the forum and participants’ experience.
