June 2009
At the recent AGM in Burlington, Ontario, a special volunteer recognition dinner was
held to honour Osteoporosis Canada’s 2009 award recipients. Through obstacles, health concerns, competing
demands for time, and the trials and tribulations of daily life, Osteoporosis Canada’s volunteers continue to
show great dedication to the organization and the osteoporosis cause.
The Backbone Award recognizes the special individuals who, in
their own unique way, provide the strength necessary for both growth and stability. They bring their Chapters
to life and motivate others to reach goals. Backbone Awards were presented to:
Eileen Fadelle, Toronto & Area Chapter
Jasleen Kaur, Saskatoon Chapter
Jo-Anne Beer, National Office
Kim Thompson, Hamilton-Burlington Chapter
Laurent Lamoureux, Quebec City Chapter
Marian Kremers, Manitoba Chapter
Marion Harris, Ottawa Chapter
Rosemary Leonowicz, Peterborough Chapter
Sandy Linseman, Waterloo Wellington Chapter
Sheila Brien, COPN
The Award for Overall Excellence recognizes a Chapter which has
excelled over the past year in the areas of education, volunteer development, fund development, and
communications.
This year’s recipient, the Quebec City Chapter, has made its mark on the
landscape of the province and has planted our cause firmly in the minds of school children and provincial
legislators alike. The Chapter’s enthusiastic and dedicated volunteers work exceptionally well as a team. For
its innovation, successful fundraising ideas, and the fantastic awareness work that has been done, it is easy
to see how the Quebec City Chapter earned the 2009 Award for Overall Excellence.
The Eleanor Mills Inspiration Award recognizes a volunteer who,
like Eleanor, has embraced his or her own osteoporosis, and by doing so has inspired others with his/her
determination, perseverance and optimism, and has given of him/herself to champion the cause.
Recipient Marg MacDonell is proof that one person can indeed make a big
difference. Marg’s contributions to the Manitoba Chapter, Osteoporosis Canada’s Board of Directors, and to
COPN are numerous and highly valued. Her positive attitude and determination to spread the word about
osteoporosis are great assets to the organization.
Congratulations to all of this year’s award recipients, and thank you to
all Osteoporosis Canada volunteers for your efforts, both big and small! Together we will continue to make a
difference in the lives of Canadians with osteoporosis.
