Dr. Angela Cheung is the Director of University Health
Network Osteoporosis Program, the Director of Centre of Excellence in Skeletal Health Assessment (CESHA), the
Associate Director of University Health Network Women’s Health Program, Senior Scientist at the Toronto
General Research Institute and Associate Professor of Medicine, Medical Imaging, Health Policy, Management
and Evaluation, Public Health Sciences, Institute of Biomedical, Biomaterial and Mechanical Engineering, and
Institute of Medical Sciences at the University of Toronto. She obtained her M.D. degree from Johns Hopkins
University School of Medicine in 1988, and her Ph.D. degree from Harvard University in 1997. She is a Fellow
of the Royal College of Physicians of Canada, and is a board-certified internist in the United States. She
has been in clinical practice for the past 19 years, and specializes in postmenopausal
osteoporosis.
Dr. Cheung has received many honors and awards throughout her medical
career for her excellence in clinical work, research and education. She was recently awarded a Canadian
Institutes for Health Research (CIHR) Institute of Gender and Health (IGH) senior investigator award in
postmenopausal health. Other recent ones include the CIHR/IGH mid career scientist award, the Ontario
Premier’s Research Excellence Award for innovations in postmenopausal osteoporosis, and the University Health
Network Department of Medicine Award for Excellence in Clinical Teaching. She holds full membership in a
number of professional associations including the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario, the American
College of Physicians, the North American Menopause Society, the American Society for Bone and Mineral
Research, and the International Society of Clinical Densitometry.
Dr. Cheung’s research interests are in the area of postmenopausal
osteoporosis, especially in prevention and early diagnosis, and evaluation of new therapies and technologies.
She has approximately 100 publications in peer-reviewed medical journals and has held peer-reviewed grants
from CIHR, Physicians’ Services Incorporate (PSI), International Society of Clinical Densitometry (ISCD),
National Cancer Institute of Canada (NCIC) and the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada (HSFC). She is a
frequent speaker on osteoporosis, and has presented widely at national and international scientific meetings.
She worked with Osteoporosis Canada and the Canadian Task Force for Preventive Health Care on the 2002 and
2004 osteoporosis guidelines. She is currently the chair for the Osteoporosis Canada Scientific Advisory
Council Research Committee, and the Canadian Bone Strength Working Group, and is the co-chair for the 2009
CIHR Institute of Musculoskeletal Health and Arthritis Canadian Bone Consensus Conference.
