Personal Stories

Colm Kelly

Colm was first diagnosed with osteoporosis of the lumbar spine in 2007. In August 2010 he tripped and fell while running and broke his left arm just below the shoulder joint. But Colm didn’t let this stop him from getting fit. To date he has 7 Marathon and 8 Ironman finishes. This year he won his age-group at St. Croix 70.3 (Half-Ironman), U.S. Virgin Islands, and qualified for the Ironman World Championship at Kona, Hawaii, to be held October 8th, 2011!

Ann Harland

Osteoporosis had made a sudden, undesirable change in Anne Harland’s active life in the summer of 2008. She had thoroughly enjoyed dragon boat paddling with the Bosom Buddies Breast Cancer Survivor Dragon Boat Team for the last nine years and had been taking osteoporosis medication for the same amount of time.

Margaret McNabb

Margaret McNabb suffered from a sore back for years and years, and kept going to her physician until he finally referred her to a specialist. Although the thought had never occurred to her, Margaret was diagnosed with osteoporosis after a bone mineral density test when she was 50 years old.

Evelyn Zacklyn

Over eleven years ago, Evelyn Zaklan bent over to tie her shoelace and felt a crushing pain in her back. After a visit to the hospital, she learned she had suffered a compression fracture of one of her vertebrae.

Larry Funnell

Upon his retirement in 2006 from his position with the federal government, Larry turned his attention to learning more about osteoporosis. His quest for answers and information he could trust led him to the Canadian Osteoporosis Patient Network and Osteoporosis Canada.

Joanne Beer

A retired nurse, Jo-Anne, 60, found out she had osteoporosis six years ago. Not one to be intimidated, she immediately took action, deciding to learn more about the disease by volunteering at Osteoporosis Canada’s National office in Toronto.

Norma Pett

Norma Pett has a very busy schedule. Her regular regimen includes yoga classes, two weekly visits to the gym, spending time with her seven grandchildren and attending a course in Living & Learning in Retirement. Thus, it’s a wonder that she has a spare moment at all to think about her osteoporosis.
